Greg Gutfeld on Standards

I came across a great commentary on the issue of standards written by Greg Gutfeld, perhaps best known as the host of “Red Eye” on Fox News. This comes from Breitbart’s Big Hollywood.

So Mel Gibson’s getting flak for having sex with a woman who was not his wife - something that never happens in Hollywood - but made newsworthy because he’s a hardcore Catholic. Meanwhile, Carrie Prejean continues to be crucified - for she’s a Christian who posed topless to get a job. And of course, there’s Bristol Palin, unwed and baby in tow, talking abstinence.

Of course, when it comes to this stuff, the media shifts into the only gear they know - the typed-in equivalent of Nelson Munz`s laugh.

Yeah, we get it: these Christians are all hypocrites, and you’re not.

But those who point this out so predictably foolishly think the argument ends there, as if a flawed person is somehow proof that the critic’s own moral beliefs - or lack thereof - are superior. But I`ve said this before: to be a hypocrite you need standards. Without standards, you cannot fail to reach them. And being imperfect beings, we are all destined to fail. The fact that we actually keep trying is what makes us human. And interesting.

It’s not that I support hypocrisy. There are folks who are hypocrites from day one -dirtbags who never had standards to violate (you can find them on any reality show). But the media prefers to focus on the failure of people who try, but fail - as though it’s better just to admit you’re scum, and then revel in it.

Larry Flynt exemplified that kind of hero - a man without values who delighted in exposing hypocrisy, but who also admitted to having sex with a chicken.

Talk about lack of standards. That chicken’s a skank.

In this black-is-white; up-is-down world, those with NO standards feel none the less qualified to pass judgement on those who TRY and fall short. Failing is not hypocrisy — it’s being human. Hypocrisy is claiming it’s not wrong for YOU but it IS wrong for someone else.

Remember how they hammered Ted Haggard? Here’s what I wrote then, in the RockyMountain News:
    Whose hypocrisy?
A male prostitute has given information out that he hopes will sway the upcoming Colorado vote on same-sex marriage. Saying he “had to expose the hypocrisy,” Mike Jones must be referring to his own. How does one receive money for sex, yet have some moral platform to then turn an accusing finger on the one who paid him?

Or maybe he’s referring to the hypocrisy of those in the world who trumpet “gay is good” and “free love” then pillory a man who dares drink from the well they’ve dug?

Or could it be the hypocrisy of tolerance-preaching gay activists? Does it hurt your mouth to say with one side of it that what consenting adults do in private should be their own business (I guess literally, in this case) and with the other side alert the media to what two consenting adults were doing?

When a man acknowledges a standard of right and wrong only to then fall short of it, we call that moral failing, not hypocrisy. A man of sound character confesses his faults and perseveres in spite of his weaknesses. The lesser man, rather, will attempt to change not himself, but the standard of right and wrong. Time will tell which road the Rev. Ted Haggard will choose.
