Missouri and Kansas US Representatives & The AIG 90% Tax

As we discussed on the show Saturday night, the House of Representatives passed a bill last week (HR 1586) that will “tax American International Group Inc. executives’ bonuses at a 90-percent rate.

Question: Is this the right solution? Should Congress be able to take its anger out on the very monster it created through legislation?

A caller Saturday night said this is not the right solution. He said Congress knew this would happen, otherwise they wouldn’t have included the loophole (thank you, Dodd).

Now, it sounds as though the Administration is urging the Senate to revise the House plan. Surprisingly, Biden’s economic adviser has said that he believes the President feels the House plan is going too far.

Unfortunately, not all of Kansas and Missouri’s US Representatives feel the same way as the President (or at least, how Biden’s economic adviser says he feels). Here is a list of Kansas and Missouri Representatives who voted in favor of HR 1586:

Missouri

Blunt, Roy - R MO-7
Carnahan, Russ - D MO- 3
Clay Jr., William “Lacy” - D MO-1
Cleaver, Emanuel - D MO-5
Emerson, Jo Ann - R MO-8
Skelton, Ike - D MO-4

Kansas

Moore, Dennis - D KS-3
Moran, Jerry - R KS-1

In Missouri, Todd Akin (MO-2), Sam Graves (MO-6) and Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-9) voted against the plan (all are Republicans). And in Kansas, Lynn Jenkins (KS-2) and Todd Tiarht (KS-4) voted against it (again, GOP).

Being originally from Kansas, and having interviewed and talked with Lynn Jenkins a number of times, I’m proud that she voted against this plan.

Regardless of how upset you are with the bonuses, I do not think the solution is legislative action. If the Senate passes a measure similar to the House plan, and the President signs it into action, we will be setting a frightening and dangerous precedent.

Out of anger should not come legislation (so says a conservative Yoda).
